Lord Vyrlikk walked briskly through the front doors of the Myrashekk Medical Hall. He was greeted by a page within but continued on, paying the boy no mind. He had no time to converse with pages. Word had just come to him that the previous night some foreign doctors had been brought to the Hall--foreigners from outside the realm, in fact. For the first time in the long months since the plague had gripped the city, Vyrlikk felt optimistic.

The werewolf's fur clothing bounced as he walked. For a man of his age and level of wear--wear caused by late nights ressearching the sickness that had taken so many lives in the city and coming up with naught--the Lord moved quickly. He made his way to the room where he'd been told the Other Realmers had been left for the night. He knocked on the door but, without waiting for an answer from within, entered.

With a start, Drake Ravencroft jerked from his cot. The night before hadn't really carried any sleep of worth, for Drake-- though generally unshakable-- was thoroughly unsettled by the idea of an unidentified sickness. The faint twinges of inevitable hypochondria kept him curled up, a hand near his mouth, debating whether or not he should cover his mouth with it. Such practices and precautions kept the ever-paranoid Dr. Ravencroft awake until he could no longer stand it and succumbed to sleep.

Now-- upon realizing that he had fallen asleep and was in the presence of an obvious superior-- he rose quickly, smoothing his hair and bowing slightly.

"... Drake Ravencroft, sir," he said, without prompt.

Vyrlikk looked at Drake and nodded approvingly. "Ah, yes, yes... Someone mentioned your name to me when I was briefed on your arrival," he said, pausing to reach into a leather bag slung over his shoulder. He rifled through it, furrowing his brow. Finally, he gave up looking through the bag with a sigh and ran one large hand through his dark, thinning hair. "Forgive me. I seem to have forgotten what written documents I have on the situation at my mannor... This whole mess has me rather disorganized."

The werewolf paused briefly, and then said, "But I don't suppose anyone should have briefed you on me. Rude of me to forget to introduce myself--once again, the fault of this damned plague. My name is Lord Vyrlikk, Governor of the Haerl District. That's where we are now. The Haerl District is the heart of medical science in Myrashekk and, indeed, all of Zylx. However, we have plenty of limitations and dark spots in our knowledge... Which is why we've reached out to foreign worlds. We've gotten far in our ressearch, but not far enough for this. And not as far as some other civilizations." Vyrlikk cut off here, looking contemplative.

"I'm sure I can help..." said Drake, in the most assuring way possible. It'd be a lie to say the fact the governor of the District holding the heart of medicine in this land wore fur was not a boost to Drake's confidence. Drake knelt, pulling his small, black case from under his cot and opening it, handing a weathered-looking parchment to Vyrlikk.

"My liscence-- from the resident advisor in Mercia..." he said, before adding: "the land I hail from." He paused for a moment, studying Vyrlikk. He then continued. "Before I forget, sir... would you happen to know how the disease is contracted...?"

Vyrlikk took the document and looked it over briefly. "Good, good," he murmured, and then handed it back. His face grew grim. "I haven't the slightest idea. No one has. It seems, however, to only be affecting Myrashekk--all the doctors I sent into the outlying villages reported no signs of the plague. That could be because they're underground, or it could be because it simply doesn't affect vampires. We're not sure."

He paused, putting one finger to his lips, and then went on, "We've got a quarentine around the King's castle--they're not allowed to leave and no one's allowed to enter. Very strict. They're not even allowed to open the castle windows. No one in the castle has caught the illness, you see, so we suspect it might be some sort of invisible miasma..."

Drake frowned and rubbed his chin, looking off for a moment to gather his thoughts. When he looked back at Vyrlikk, he once more began his questioning.

"Who does it affect most? Is there far more of an outbreak in uncivilized areas, or is the disease unpredictable?" At this point, he began to tap his fingers-- one after the other-- against his thumb, his tone becoming somewhat more distracted, however lucid his words were.

"Is there a specific area in which the outbreak is most prevalent? Any age group it seems to attack with most zeal? Any other races affected by the sickness? Have any treatments been conducted? ... and above all, I believe it's crucial to know just the most common symptoms of the illness..." he said, before cracking his knuckles with a nervous, albeit professional air. "I'd like to know which systems this disease attacks before I draw too many conclusions...."

"Uncivilized areas? No, no. Well, I mean, I don't know. Myrashekk is all civilized areas, see, and we haven't any idea what the condition is up north," responded Vyrlikk. "It seems to have affected all sectors of the city equally, too, with the exception of the castle which, as I told you, is under quarentine. As for sypmtoms... Well, it's a strange thing. First, there is fever and aching in the joints--no one really thought anything of that at first, you see. The lymphnodes swell, and the victim gets a headache. After that, there is fear and moodswings and droswiness during the day and insomina at night. It is a slow disease--it takes months to kill the victims. However, we have no idea how it does it, because none of my doctors will do an autopsy, for fear of catching the disease."

Drake frowned and began the steady tapping of his fingers once more.

"We had a similar case in Warwick-- tuberculosis outbreak. It was an airborne illness, and people were dying off without much warning. We used masks and other means of protection when depleting the illness. I have one such mask on my person, but only one. ... I'd very much like to perform an autopsy with your doctors, so I wonder... if I were to supply my mask to... say, the city's smithy.... Would he be able to make several more...?" He asked. He paused for a few seconds, as though pondering something.

"I'd also like background information on victims of the illness-- where they've been, what they've done, where they live..." he trailed off, before halting himself and straightening. "If... that's permitted, I meant to say...."

Vyrlikk frowned. "We don't actually have any blacksmiths in Myrashekk," he said. "We import metal goods, when necessary, from other parts of the continent... The nearest vampirian village is about half a day's walk from here, though, and I think they have a metal worker there." He frowned and rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm not sure how we could get that sort of information on the victims. We've got a couple in the observation wing of the Hall, but they're in no state to tell us anything..."
