RULES: RPing ETIQUETTE « Thread Started on Mar 18, 2008, 8:23pm »
Hello! This is the admin, of course. I'm here to address a semi-disconcerting predicament:
Poor roleplaying etiquette.
Now, this isn't entirely the fault of the roleplayer. It's more the fault of how they learned to roleplay; or so I believe. So, when roleplaying here in Dimarchai, keep these simple rules in mind:
1.) Make sure your posts can be replied to and are not just posts of your characters talking to one another *about* one another. Now. If your characters are addressing a topic pertaining to another roleplayer's characters, this is a bit of a *stretch*, but-- if you can pull it off right-- is considered fair.
EXAMPLE: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Forum Member 1: John Doe: I wish I could find my dog.
Forum Member 2: Sally: Oh, no! You lost your dog!
Doris: :B Hurr. I like dooogs.
Forum Member 3: Sarah: *looks at her friend, Melanie* I knew we shouldn't have come here.
Melanie: I agree. -------------------------------------------------------------------
Forum member 3-- in case you weren't aware-- is the one committing the wrongdoing. It's only her characters talking about a situation that only pertains to them.
2.) DO NOT FORCE YOUR CHARACTERS ON OTHER PEOPLE! This is by *far* one of the more annoying ones. Explaining your character in detail as they come into the room is all *right*, I suppose, but continually manipulating your fellow roleplayers to ask more about your characters is *rude*. If you're going to do it, stop and ask about *other people's characters* once in a while.
EXAMPLE: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Forum Member 1: John Doe: I *really* wish I could find my dog....
Forum Member 2: Sally: We could help you find your dog!
Doris: ... : B Hurr.
Forum Member 3: Sarah: I had a dog once. *sighs* His name was Dodger. He was hit by a car, you know?
Melanie: Oh, that's terrible, sis!
Sarah: I know....
Melanie: Maybe we should stop talking about *dogs*... I mean, it's obviously hurting her.... -------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, it's Forum Member 3 who's committing the travesty.
Forgive my *extreme* anger on that last one. It's just... *so* terribly rude.
All the same! If you just abide by these two simple rules-- and perhaps more to follow, if the morderator deems it be so-- then you'll be on your way to roleplaying *greatness*!

I do indeed have something to follow, Aemis.
It's quite possible to develop your character's background in a roleplay without forcing their back story on others. Take the following:
Jill: *winces at the mention of dogs* Sorry, John, but I can't help you; not a big fan of dogs.
There is still interaction with other character(s) in the post, yet a portion of the character's past is presented. This is in contrast with the following possible post:
Jill: *winces at the mention of dogs* I was bitten by a dog once. That single event changed my whole life--no longer did I feel safe. Not in my own neighbourhood, or even my home. Oh, it was so terrible! I hate all dogs now. I'm made it my mission to periodically wipe them off the face of the Earth! Imagine, biting me! Oh, those dogs will rue the day!
Melodramatic, and self-centred. I daresay no one wants to play with yellow Jill, do they?
